In China signs on the front of print shops are plastered with words that the business the print shop creates. It is a clear and efficient means of publicity to use words as their signage.
These words act as a form of advertising and they like to demonstrate their practice of typography by using strong contrasting colours, the most common color combinations are red and yellow. This colour palette is remarkable to the Chinese market and very unusual in UK print shops. I have made a book in two parts about the visual art of print shops to understand this phenomenon. The first section of the book is a collection of front signs of print shops. The second part is about five print shops that I interviewed and photographed. I have combined photography, interviews and bilingual typography to display the visual art of the print shops and the insights of the print shops managers on the design business.
