In this project I explored the impact and influence of soul music on the civil rights movement and how the themes and messages of these songs still apply in the context of today's society.
Through typography and editorial design I have explored the lyrics and messages behind Marvin Gaye's 1971 song 'What's Going On'. The song acts as a social comment on the intense and politically charged state of America at the time, discussing themes such as war, segregation and injustice.
The second part of the project combines typography and moving image to represent the poetic lyrics of Nina Simone's 1967 song 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free'. Simone's delicate portrayal of 1960s America tackles similar issues to 'What's Going On' as my project aims to draw comparisons from these songs to the issues we still see in more recent times.
